What To Know About Botox

We all know that weight fluctuation, a change in the way our bodies feel or the way our skin and hair look are all completely natural things (and that those who get to age are lucky in their own right). But, we also know that every person is different! Perhaps you’d rather not intervene in the age-old (wink, wink) dilemma of getting older or maybe you have specific moisturisers and face serums (and maybe a go-to facial) specifically to keep your skin looking its best. On the other hand, maybe you’ve been getting curious about more involved treatments, like Botox and fillers.

What Is Botox, Filler & An Injectable?

Botox is actually a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, an injectable neurotoxin that affects the nerves and causes muscle weakening. Botulinum toxin (temporarily!) blocks the signals from a nerve to a muscle, which means the injected muscles can’t contract and tense up. This relaxing and softening of the muscle results in a smoothening look to the skin and the prevention of fine lines and wrinkles, which are usually formed by muscle contraction. The effects are temporary but can last up to several months.

An “injectable” simply means a drug that can be put into the body using a needle and syringe. And a dermal “filler” is a gel-like substance that is injected beneath the skin for various reasons, most commonly for cosmetic purposes like creating volume, smoothening lines and softening creases and enhancing facial contours. Most injectable fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and last for about six months or longer.

The most common botulinum toxin is, of course, Botox. Other brands include Dysport and Xeomin which all work in similar ways.

What Is Botox Used For?

Injected in very small doses, botulinum toxin is most commonly known for reducing wrinkles and lines on the face — formed around the eyes, mouth and forehead when you frown, smile and squint. Lines may become less and less visible after each treatment as the muscles become less prominent, and you’re not just smoothening out already-formed lines but preventing new ones from appearing. It’s non-surgical, reliable and efficient.

Botulinum toxin can also be used to slim the face and lift and define the jawline, as well as on the neck to reduce vertical neck bands. In some places, you can even have diluted doses of botulinum toxin placed superficially just under the skin to reduce oiliness. You could also use it in the underarm area to reduce excessive sweating and in the forehead to help with chronic migraines.

What Are The Side Effects & Risks Of Botox?

  • While not very common, you may see reddening, swelling and minor bruising around the injection site.
  • A headache and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours
  • Administering too much botulinum toxin might result in a “frozen” or expressionless face, asymmetrical issues and even the drooping of the eyelids and eyebrows. Botox is temporary, so any of these issues will wear off.
  • Very rarely, serious problems like blurred or double vision (if injected around the eyes) or breathing difficulties (if injected in the neck area) can happen.

When administered by a fully-trained physician, botulinum toxin can produce consistent, natural and predictable results. We all have different muscle strengths and placements so the treatment should be as personalised as possible. We can’t emphasise enough how important it is to consult a doctor you can trust. Concentration and dosage make all the difference. We’d highly suggest reading the Department of Health’s informational page on cosmetic procedures and referring to its list of registered medical practitioners.

What To Expect When You Get Botox In Hong Kong

Botulinum toxin injections are a nonsurgical, in-office treatment that requires minimal preparation. Your face will be cleaned and an anaesthetic numbing cream may be applied. The botulinum toxin will be injected into muscles using a very fine needle. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes and typically takes two or three days to begin seeing the effect.

While it requires no downtime, it’s best to avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 24 hours, massaging and rubbing the face for about three days and facials for about two weeks. Your practitioner should give you more detailed advice.

What To Know & Consider Before You Get Botox In Hong Kong

  • If you’re thinking about having botulinum toxin injections, it’s important to be super clear about why you want them. For example, you may achieve similar effects with skincare products and facial treatments. All procedures have some risks and if you’re disappointed with the outcome, this could impact your emotional well-being. We’d suggest giving this informational page a read.
  • Do not get botulinum toxin injections if you have a skin infection, are unwell in any way, have a neuromuscular condition, and if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also a great idea to consider all medication you take — for example, antidepressants and antihistamines do not compromise Botox treatments but aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may.
  • It’s not permanent — the effect will usually only last for three to four months (although it can last longer!)
  • A single session is sufficient to see results. You may wait a few days to see an initial effect and it may take a week or two to be fully visible but that one session will be more than enough.
  • Prices really vary in Hong Kong. While we’d ordinarily look to more affordable options, be wary of cheaper clinics that aren’t reputable and well-reviewed, it’s not worth it to take the risk — this is your face and body!
  • Make sure the person doing your injections is qualified and experienced. Skip salons and go directly to a Hong Kong-registered doctor. Review before-and-after photos to check their previous work and look for independent reviews online.
  • Schedule an initial consultation where you can express your needs and cosmetic desires to your practitioner. Make sure you’re comfortable with your doctor, and that their philosophy aligns with yours.
  • Ask your practitioner about their training, qualifications and experience; the name of the product, its license and where it’s made; risks and side-effects; and what will happen if things go wrong.
  • Clarify any previous dosages, which brands you’ve used before and are using now, then work out which will be most suitable for your skin. Make sure to also let your practitioner know your medical history, any allergies and all medical conditions.
  • Be wary of clinics that pressure you to purchase a higher injection dosage.

Enter the new lunar year with your best foot forward! Our guide to 2025 Chinese New Year traditions and taboos will help you maximise your good luck and ward off the bad.

It’s almost a brand new lunar year – kung hei fat choi! Arguably the festival with the most cultural significance in Hong Kong, Chinese New Year celebrates the start of the Chinese lunisolar calendar year, marking the end of a cold, dark winter and welcoming spring. Enter the Year of the Snake with your best foot forward, and if you play your cards right, this just might be your most prosperous year yet! From when to book your next haircut to how to properly hang your decorations, here are all the Chinese New Year traditions and taboos you need to know.

When Is Chinese New Year 2025?

Following the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year usually takes place in either January or February. In 2025, the first day of the lunisolar calendar will fall on Wednesday, 29 January and will welcome the Year of the Snake.

Traditionally, this festival used to take place over fifteen days but, in the modern working world, only three days are given in Hong Kong as public holidays. However, many festivities and traditions still carry on past this three-day holiday.

Common Chinese New Year Greetings: Kung Hei Fat Choi, Sun Tai Kin Hong & More

The Lunar New Year doesn’t officially begin until the second week of February but you’ll probably start to hear people greet each other with “kung hei fat choi” (wishing you a prosperous year) much earlier in the month. If someone says this to you, it’s good form to return the greeting, or you can respond by saying “sun tai kin hong” meaning “I wish you good health”. Married people are traditionally obliged to give lai see to anyone younger and single when greeted. If you really want to impress this year (and try and score a few extra lai see), you can mix it up and try these other common Chinese New Year blessings:

  • 新年快樂 “sun nin fai lok” — happy new year
  • 心想事成 “sum seung si sing” — may all your wishes come true
  • 大吉大利 “dai gut dai lei” — good luck and may your year go smoothly

Chinese New Year Traditions: No Borrowing Money

Pay Your Dues Before The Start Of Chinese New Year

If you borrowed money from anyone last year, be sure to pay them back before the start of the New Year. It is said that any outstanding loans will bring you misfortune (lending money on Chinese New Year’s Day is also not recommended!). And if you’re the one who is owed money, don’t go knocking on your friend’s door demanding your dues as this is believed to bring you bad luck for a full year!

Hang Up Your Chinese New Year Decorations — The Right Way!

Once you’ve finished deep cleaning your flat, it’s time to hang up your Chinese New Year decorations. You’ll see a lot of red lanterns (used to drive off bad luck), as well as paper cutouts and couplets (to attract good fortune). Just be sure to hang your decorations the correct way! The vertical couplets (two lines of Chinese poetry) go on each side of a doorway, while the horizontal banners are hung above doorframes. The paper cutouts of auspicious symbols are typically affixed to windows.

Sassy Tip: In Chinese, the word for “upside down” sounds similar to the word for “arrive”, so people tend to hang their fuk (福) signs — which represent “good fortune” — upside down to symbolise a good year to come.

Chinese New Year Traditions & Taboos

Buy New Clothes For Chinese New Year (But Not Books Or Shoes!)

Shopaholics will be glad to hear that a shopping spree is encouraged. In fact, it’s customary to buy yourself a whole new outfit to wear on New Year’s Day (don’t mind if we do!) to set yourself up for a fresh start and attract more wealth in the year ahead. Be sure to buy any shoes and books you’ve been eyeing up while you’re at it as it is frowned upon to buy these items (both are thought to bring misfortune) during the start of Chinese New Year.

Sweep Out The Old Before Chinese New Year Eve

What better incentive to declutter your room and give your home a good dusting than the promise of bringing in good fortune? As the Chinese characters for “dust” and “old” sound similar, the act of sweeping away dust is seen as a way to banish the old and usher in the new. It’s important for this to be done before Chinese New Year Eve as it’s considered bad luck to clean your home during the first week of the first Lunar month; people typically start two days before the holiday (spring cleaning day). Remember to stow away your broom and vacuum because you wouldn’t want to accidentally reduce your good fortune!

Chinese New Year Traditions: Wear Red

Dressing In Red For Luck On Chinese New Year

In Chinese culture, the colour red is considered to bring good luck. So it’s no surprise that the hue is seen all around during Chinese New Year in the form of lai see packets, paper lanterns and door couplets. You may also notice that many people choose to wear red on the day to attract even more good fortune. At the opposite end of the spectrum, wearing black and white is a big no-no, as these colours are traditionally associated with mourning.

Don’t Wash Or Cut Your Hair During Chinese New Year

The Chinese character for “hair” is the same character as the “fat”  in “fat choi” (as in “kung hei fat choi”), which means “to become wealthy”. This is why people refrain from washing or cutting their hair over the first few days of the Chinese New Year. Sharp objects are also avoided during the holiday as they are seen as a sign of bad luck (the use of scissors, in particular, is believed to lead to quarrels and disputes with others), so if you failed to book a trim ahead of the holiday, stay away from those pointy shears, no matter how long your locks have grown.

Chinese New Year Traditions: Open Windows

Open Your Windows At Midnight

The annual fireworks display over Victoria Harbour is one of Hong Kong’s biggest Chinese New Year traditions (our city’s way of warding off bad luck with a bang), and we always look forward to seeing how the year’s display will top the last. Carry out the custom of opening your windows at the stroke of midnight, which some households believe in doing, to usher out the old year, and welcome in the Year of the Snake.

While the heartache of romantic break-ups have been expressed across every medium since the beginning of time, less discussed is the (sometimes worse!) pain of dissolved friendships.

Falling out of love is easy enough to understand, but in theory, friendships can last forever — so when they don’t, the sting is that much more painful. Team Sassy share their immediate connections that turned into big friendship losses, which continue to play on their minds even today — plus, how they survived it, what it taught them about relationships and, ultimately, about themselves.

The friend who was ghosted big time

We had similar humour and trauma bonded about our previous job. She was very keen to befriend me in the beginning. I was fine with it but she initiated everything, asking me to go to yoga class after work. If I didn’t reply to her messages straight away, she’d be very sensitive about it.

I don’t know what happened. She started to not reply and I sensed a big energy change. I kept asking what was wrong and she told me, “Don’t be so sensitive. We have our own lives”. I asked a few more times but she never addressed the problem and I felt like she was gaslighting me.

I’m the sort of person who wants to know if I did something wrong to see if I can change or  apologise, not to be kept in the dark. I had nightmares about it, felt abandoned, confused and anxious that she was talking behind my back about something I did. I didn’t want to feel bad about a person who doesn’t care about me, or add anything to my life.

Of course you feel hurt when grieving the loss of friendship, but I look back and think about the good moments we shared and am grateful for that. We were compatible for two years, but not everyone is here to stay. As a kid I thought it was ‘friends forever’ but I’ve realised that circumstances, values, and personalities can change and it’s ok to go on separate paths. I need to learn to let go of some people. If they don’t want to be friends anymore, I’ve learnt to respect myself enough to let them go.

To make new friends, I went on Bumble BFF. You’ll find your tribe and people who will love you for who you are. That person doesn’t define you — I’m an amazing person and friend. I reached out two months ago and she replied. I’m actually at peace with it now. I have better friends. The relationship evolved and we just weren’t compatible.

The friend stuck in an awkward living situation

During my first year of college, my roommate and I bonded over a mutual dislike of the third girl we lived with, and ended up becoming close friends. We were very different people though, and there were certain things about her that really frustrated me, like her lack of boundaries. That came to a head years later when I went through something quite traumatic and she started acting strangely about it, bringing it up often and constantly comparing her own unserious situations. Maybe she was just trying to empathise, but I found it quite triggering and it made me see her differently.

It was awkward because we were still living together, although I distanced myself and then eventually moved. It was like a proper break-up — we had to sit down and talk about it. She told me she felt like there was something wrong, and I had to admit that I didn’t feel like our friendship was working out. We continued living together for a few months. I was a bit shitty about it.

I learnt that things that you find annoying about people from the onset tend to stay there, and that you should protect your boundaries. I feel like I could have handled it better, but you don’t have to be besties with everyone if it’s not working. You have the option to get out of it.

The last time I was in her area I considered reaching out to apologise, but decided against it as there’s no need to rekindle that relationship. Everyone has complex lives, which you are not the centre of. I’m sure she’s doing great.

The friend who held a decade-long grudge (and for good reason)

This is a story of how long I can hold a grudge for, as this was a friend I made at the age of 8. We lived close to each other so it was convenient, and were both into dance class. As kids do, we squabbled but would usually bounce back quickly. I had a lot of health problems as a child and everyone in my class knew I wasn’t allowed to swim due to constant ear infections. I was hospitalised for a variety of ailments, including inexplicable leg tremors and stomach issues, which the girl knew about.

I don’t remember what caused it but once the girl said to me, “Every time you’ve been in hospital, it’s a punishment for what you’ve done”. I was 10! For some reason, this one thing that girl said to me pops into my head every time something happens to me, including when I recently had pneumonia. After she weaponised this over me, I was never able to get over it, or trust her again. It was a shame as we had a bond, and a lot in common, but I wasn’t able to move past it in my life.

There were people around when it happened, and a mutual friend of ours was up in arms about it, angry on my behalf. I didn’t make a huge deal of it, and just walked away. It was a wildly inappropriate thing to say, and upset me more after the fact. I didn’t address it, just extracted myself from the situation, and hoped she took the hint.

I dealt with it by keeping her at arm’s length, even though I remained civil and we’d even sometimes hang out at parties. I never told her anything personal, at the back of my mind aware she might use an illness against me again. To this day, I still believe that once someone hurts you once, they’re capable of doing it again. When people show you who they are, believe them. That’s stuck with me forever, and I don’t think I’ve gotten over it.

If I know someone is capable of using personal information against me, I don’t let it go beyond a certain level of friendship to protect myself against having the same issues in future. I’m not particularly religious, but in my family’s culture, karma is a big thing — what goes around comes around. I hear her voice in my head every time I get sick, and think about what I’ve done recently to deserve this.

I understand I shouldn’t take it as literally as I did, and that it probably never crossed her mind I’d be thinking about it 15 years later. This was a very formative experience for me. When someone shows signs of having this personality, I immediately put up a wall. Once someone betrays me in a specific way, I’m not big on forgiveness. It forever alters how I see that person.

Every now and then, I’ll see a random update about her, but there’s no part of me that wants her in my life. We haven’t spoken for 10 years, and I’m fine with that.

The heartbroken friend who never got closure

We became friends during orientation at university as we lived down the hall from one another. We vibed immediately, we had the same dry wit, sarcasm and sense of humour. She’s incredibly intelligent and so we instinctively gravitated towards each other, sharing similar values and a sense of self. The first party we ever went to together, she printed out walking directions…I knew we would get on from that moment forward.

After graduation I moved to another city, but we continued to visit each other regularly throughout the years. We remained incredibly close despite the distance, she even threw my hen’s party. I started leaning into my career and the city I was living in slowly became my identity, while she went in another direction. The last time she visited me, we headed out to a high-end restaurant and she showed up in a farming outfit. I half joked that she couldn’t wear that out and asked her to borrow something from my closet, which she did. The visit went on for another day or two, but that was the last time we ever saw each other.

Looking back, I always assumed that comment was the driving force for the breakup, that our differences became too apparent that night, and she just couldn’t be bothered. She stopped reaching out and answering my calls. I’ll never know the real reason, but I can’t help but think that was the dinner that changed it all.

I wondered for years if I became the representation to her of a button-up formal type, someone she was always desperate not to become. The irony wasn’t lost on me when years later I saw her featured in a J.Crew ad, I forwarded her the email and said I loved it and that I hoped things were going well, which was my attempt to open the door. She responded, “Hope all is well.” We follow each other on Instagram, but she’s muted my stories.

The fact that she couldn’t just tell me, “I don’t love this version of you” made me wonder if we were really best friends. But looking back, of course we were — she gave the speech at my engagement party, we stood by each other’s side during every breakup, every move and every life moment for nearly a decade. It haunted me for years. I was devastated. It hurt more than my first love. People closest to me know that it’s something I still carry to this day. It was worse than any other break-up I’ve ever had because there was no finality to it.

If becoming different people was the reason our friendship ended, the takeaway is to let people be themselves. Support them as they are and lift them up. I’ve learnt about myself that putting a period to every sentence is something I need. I never got the closure I so desperately needed and it’s something that continues to haunt me still to this day.

I’ll never be fully over it, but as with everything, time heals. I’m so far removed now that I don’t know who she is anymore. I don’t know that I would reach out because I’ve tried over the last decade, and we’re a lot older now, I’m sure she has since moved on. When it’s hot, it’s hot, but despite impressions to the contrary, there are parts of Hong Kong where winter temperatures can plunge to as low as zero. Fortunately, there are plenty of dining spots out there to warm you up when the weather turns cold.

Never mind holidays, nothing says winter quite like indulging in traditional ‘stick-to-the-ribs’ soups, stews and casseroles for a comforting meal during the cold months between December and February. Whether you fancy one of the various types of hot pot from across the region, a warming curry with a spicy kick or a Japanese-style beef stew, there’s an option to choose from among Quality Tourism Services (QTS) Scheme outlets – and all of them are guaranteed to help you get cosy. No space heater required.

Traditional dan dan noodles in spicy soup in white bowl surrounded by side dishes and bamboo steamer basket.

Wing Lai Yuen Restaurant

Legend holds that the nearly 80-year-old Wing Lai Yuen began life in a run-down squatter village shop, finally moving to its bright, shiny location 25 years ago. Either way, this consistent Bib Gourmand winner has earned its reputation for authentic, old school dan dan noodles, the kind made in Imperial kitchens centuries ago and whose secret recipe has been passed down to the current eatery. The spicy, nutty broth is a comforting winter soup, and Wing Lai Yuen’s freshly cut noodles hit the spot every time. The signature homemade dan dan (with or without meat) are a must-have, but other hearty recommendations from the Szechuan and Shanghainese menu include the gold medal wonton chicken soup casserole and succulent braised ham in honey sauce. Winter is welcome to linger.
